West Beach choked with sea foam

It is very windy at West Beach. The sea is rough and spits a lot of foam. The smell of the restless sea fills my lungs, while the foam sticks onto my boots and sand from the top of the bluff lands on my hair.

C'e' molto vento sulla spiaggia West Beach. Il mare e' mosso e sputa un sacco di schiuma. L' odore del mare irrequieto riempie i miei polmoni mentre la schiuma si attacca ai mei scarponi e sabbia dalla cima della scogliera atterra sui mei capelli.

Somebody has painted over the graffiti.

Under a golden sunlight the bluff made of clay and sand looks particularly beautiful.

Illuminata da una luce dorata la scogliera di argilla e sabbia e' particolarmente bella.

The other side of Xcalak, Mexico

At Xcalac (Quintana Roo, Mexico) the trash on the beach is rather overwhelming. Here there are not big hotels with staff who clean the beach everyday so the plastic keeps accumulating without any respite. There is no end to this invasion...

Nel paese di Xcalac il problema della spazzatura sulla spiaggia e' piuttosto acuto. Qui noin ci sono grandi alberghi con addetti alla pulizia della spiaggia per cui ogni giorno la plastica si accumula sempre di piu', non c'e' fine a questa invasione...

Water Tale

Water sustains life on earth as we know it. Water welcomes us when we swim, snorkel and scuba dive. I bet that most of us do not usually wonder where it comes from. We know that it falls down from the sky in the form of rain, snow or hail, while the oceans, rivers and lakes seem to have been in existence since the beginning of time.

The initial starting point of this project was the water cycle. Then, I began to reflect about the intrinsic beauty of water in its diverse forms and colors. Memories of the aquatic creatures that I have encountered while snorkeling and scuba diving filled my head. So I decided to weave all of these watery threads into one digital tapestry.

I looked at 3 years worth of video clips and shot others specifically for this video, only a few made it to the editing screen (and they were far more that I ever have to deal with).

My buddy and I filmed most of them with our Canon Powershot A570 and S90.

For the first time I collaborated with a third scuba diver from Quebec, Dominique Brodeur, and another Canadian filmmaker, John Novotny, from Alberta.

Thank you very much for letting me use your video clips!

I also want to thank my buddy Sam Osteen. His support, patience and advice have been invaluable for the creation of this work. Then, I want to thank the Spanish composer Roger Subirana Mata for the amazingly wonderful piece of orchestral music that he has made available for free on jamendo.com. L'acqua sostinene la vita sulla terra che noi conosciamo. L’acqua ci accoglie a braccia aperte quando nuotiamo, snorkel e facciomo i sub. Scommetto che la maggior parte di noi non si sofferma a pensare da dove venga. Sappiamo che cade dal cielo in forma di pioggia, neve e grandine, mentre glil oceani, i fiumi e i laghi sebrano che siano esistiti fin dall’inizio dei tempi.

Il punto iniziale di questo progetto e’ stato il ciclo dell’acqua. Poi ho incominciato a riflettere alla bellezza intrinseca dell’acqua che si manifesta in a multitudine di forme e colori. La mia testa si e’ riempita di ricordi delle creature acquatiche che ho incontrato mentre ho fatto lo snorkeling e immersioni subacque. Per cui decisi di intrecciare questi fili acquei in modo da formare un tappeto digitale.

Ho riguardato tree anni di video clips e filmato delle clip nuove per questo video, soltanto alcune sono arrivate sullo schermo del missaggio ( ed erano parecchie).

Io e il mio buddy abbiamo filamto questo video con una Canon Powershot A570 e S90.

Per la prima volta ho collaborato con un terzo sub del Quebec, Dominique Brodeur, ed un’altro filmmaker canadese di Alberta, John Novotny.

After the storms at West Beach

The HOMECOMING graffiti and the hanging tree are still there.

The bunker made of concrete is still there too but more visible. The crumbling bluff of sand and clay reveals a strength that surprises me.

Pure il bunker fatto di cemento e' ancora li' ma piu' visibile. La scogliera sbriciolante di sabbia e argilla ha dimostrato di avere piu forza di quello che pensassi.

Despite its apparent tenacity, other trees, roots, sand and clay have tumbled down the bluff.

Nonostante la sua apparente tenacita', altri alberi, altre radici, sabbia e argilla sono caduti dalla scogliera.

The combination of high tide and rough sea has created very hazardous conditions for walking on the beach. The crushing waves are reaching the base of the bluff and tossing heavy logs around as if they were toothpicks.

La combinazione di alta marea e mare mosso ha creato condizioni perocolose per camminare sulla spiaggia. Le onde arrivano fino alla base della scogliera e portano alla riva dei tronchi come se fossero degli stuzzicadenti.

For the first time what looks like to be an octopus of a considerable size washed out on the beach after a storm. Well that's what I think it is. Could it possibly be a giant squid?

September 30, 2011 Snorkeling at Cranberry Lake

The surface of the lake was calm and inviting, underneath it the visibility was simply awful! I was able to see something only with my eyes glued to the bottom in a couple of feet of water.

La superficie del lago era clama ed invitante,sotto la visibilita' era terribile! Sono riusciuta a vedere qualche cosa tenendo glli occhi attaccati al fond in un metro d'acqua.

While immersed into a soup of fine rotten organic material, I wished to see a crayfish and right at the end of my snorkeling session, after about one hour and a half, I spotted several of this freshwater crustaceans.

Mentre ero immersa in una 'zuppa' di materiale organico fine, desideravo vedere un gambero d'acqua dolce. Quando era venuto il momento di ritornare a riva, dopo un'ora e mezza, mi sono imbattuta in alcuni di questi crostacei.

I also spotted some odd looking lumps that looked like underwater dog poo. I wondered if beavers or other large mammals lived at the lake...

Ho anche visto degli strani grumi che assomigliavano ad escrementi canini acquatici. Mi sono chiesta se castori o altri grandi mammiferi abitassero nei paraggi.

Cranberry Lake is a popular spot for fishing, boating and swimming. Like any other lakes easily reachable by people is littered with the usual trash.

Il lago di Cranberry e' un lago popolare per la pesca sportiva, andare in barca e nuotare. Come ogni altro lago facilmente raggiungibile dalla gente e' disseminato di spazzatura.

Back on the surface, the yellow pond lilies have passed their prime even if underwater I saw that new leaves were still growing.

In superficie le ninfee chimate yellow pond lilies si stanno appassendo anche se sott'acqua ho visto che nuove foglie stanno ancora crescendo.

Amphibian Roots Part Three

I still remember a day of late summer in the 1970s, when I reached with my sister and her boyfriend a sea cave on his inflatable rowing boat located behind Cavoli Bay on Isola d’Elba, an island of the Arcipelago Toscano (Tuscan Archipleago) off the coast of Tuscany, Italy. At that time I was already a keen snorkeler and used to watch Jacques Cousteau’s television series ‘The Underwater Odyssey of Commander Cousteau’. To my childish eyes my snorkeling adventure inside that cave was as glamorous as one of Cousteau’s exotic dives. The nuances of greens and blues of its water enchanted me by revealing a beauty of the Tyrrhenian Sea that I had not experienced yet.

Last June I had a similar unforgettable experience while diving in the waters of another island of the Tuscan Archipelago called Giglio. I became a scuba diver in the cold and green Pacific Northwest, where visibility often drops to a few feet and currents can be challenging. What a striking contrast making bubbles, for the first time, in the clearer and cheering blue water of the sea of my childhood, the Mediterranean, where tides are far less severe and currents generally gentler!

Isola del Giglio (whose name derives from the latinization of the Greek word for goat: Aegilium) is a beautiful granitic island located 15 km (9 miles) west from the coast of southern Tuscany. It is part of the Parco Nazionale dell’Arcipelago Toscano (Tuscan Archipelago National Park), which is the largest marine park in Europe. Giglio is the second largest island of the archipelago and well known among the Italian scuba diving community for its gentle currents and excellent visibility.

The island is dominated by the imposing steep slopes of the 490 m (1600 ft.) high hill called Poggio della Pagana. Its coastline is mostly rocky and accessible from land by few narrow and curvy roads and a network of trails that sharply lead to clear turquoise water or breathtaking viewpoints. Archaeological evidence suggests that it was inhabited since the Bronze Age.

All six dives that I did at Giglio were from large motorized rubber dinghies owned by Massimiliano Marsalli who, together with his wife Yaris, runs the smallest dive center I have ever seen, called Max Shark. It is located a short walk from the ferry terminal in the island main town Giglio Porto. The limited space available to Massimiliano for his recreational diving operation is also reflected in the town’s cozy little restaurants, cafés and fascinating narrow alleys. Massimiliano and Yaris arranged my accommodation in a furnished bed-sit just around the corner from their office-home and an ice cream shop where I could taste a flavor that I had never tried before: basil.

The island inviting sea and Mediterranean sun made me believe that I was somewhere in the Caribbean. ‘Would my 6.5 mm semi-dry suit be too thick?’ I wondered while I was wearing my suit waist down and loading my gear on the boat for my first dive. By the time that we reached the dive site, after a short ride, I was so hot that I ended up wearing my BC in the water. After the dive, I realized that Giglio was not a tropical island and my doubts about the thickness of my suit disappeared altogether. It seemed an overkill at depths above 15 m (49 ft.), where temperature was around 20° C/68° F, but further below there was a thermocline that reduced it to 15° C/59 ° F and made me shiver as if I were diving in the Pacific Northwest.

I grew up using the metric system. Since I became a scuba diver in the US I had to learn the customary system. At Giglio, after adjusting my computer from feet to meters, I was still thinking in feet. Reading the depth in meters and converting it into feet was a little confusing. I had to keep reminding myself that there was a vast difference regarding bottom time and air consumption between 30 m. and 30 ft.

Giglio’s underwater beauty reveals itself slowly and unexpectedly. From shallow depths, rocky walls and boulders display a cacophony of bright colors. Different species of sponges encrust their hard surfaces turning them into abstract paintings, where light blue, pink and orange surround the yellow columns and tentacles of Margherite di Mare (Parazoanthus axinellae) (literally ‘Sea Daises’, a colonial sea anemone).

In waters below 25 m (75 ft.), the flamboyant reds of Gorgonie (Paramuricea clavata, a coral whose polyps do not produce calcium carbonate skeletons) and the hard coral Corallo Rosso (Corallium rubrum) emerge in their full splendor under the beam of a diving light. Swimming at a slow pace with an alert eye rewarded me with the sights of lobsters, moray eels, octopi and barracudas. At night, the local weary fish were far more approachable and easier to photograph, while tropical looking shrimps and crabs crawled out from their rocky hiding places.

For the first time, I had the chance to encounter a remarkable mollusk that I would have never expected to see in these waters. The triangular shaped Nacchere (Pinna nobilis) proudly rise upright from sandy bottoms at shallow depths reaching 1 m. (3 ft.) in height. Swimming above these large shells was like low flying over miniature prehistoric standing stones. They are the largest bivalves of the Mediterranean Sea.

At Giglio, I also had the opportunity to dive inside the ruins of an ancient Roman villa that was built by the Domizi Enobarbi family (from which the Emperor Nero came) during the first half of the I century BC. It lies in a small and shallow cove not far from Porto Giglio harbor called Cala del Saraceno. Both snorkelers and divers can still see the remains of the Murenarium, a large fish tank specifically built for aquaculture. Now, different species of fish, some pretty colorful such as the Donzella Pavonina (Thalassoma pavo) and Bavosa Rossa (Parablennius nigriceps), swim in and out the Murenarium as they please. They do not end up on the Domizi Enobarbi’s menue any more, but have to dodge the swift appetite of cormorants.

Forty years ago, as a young snorkeler, I began to discover the wonders of the Tyrrhenian Sea that languidly laps the Tuscan coast in the summer months. Today, as a scuba diver, the same enchanting water has offered me the opportunity to encounter other awesome creatures and gave me a taste of what is like to swim in an ancient archaeological site making me longing for more underwater adventures of this kind.

Mi ricordo ancora un giorno di tarda estate negli anni ’70, quando raggiunsi con mia sorella ed il suo ragazzo, sul suo canotto, una grotta marina situata dietro la baia di Cavoli nell’Isola d’Elba, l’isola più grande dell’Arcipelago Toscano. A quel tempo ero già una patita dello snorkeling e guardavo con entusiasmo i documentari televisivi di Jacques Cousteau della serie “L’Odissea Subacquea del Comandante Cousteau”. Per i mei occhi di bambina la mia avventura con le pinne e la maschera dentro a quella grotta era paragonabile ad una delle immersioni tropicali mitiche di Cousteau. Le sfumature di verde e blu dell’acqua rivelavano una bellezza del mare Tirreno sconosciuta che mi incantò in modo indelebile.

Lo scorso giugno vissi una simile esperienza indimenticabile mentre mi sono immersa nelle acque di un’altra isola dell’Arcipelago Toscano, chiamata Giglio. Sono diventa una sub nelle acque fredde e verdi del Pacific Northwest, dove la visibilità spesso si riduce a pochi metri e le correnti possono essere difficoltose. Che contrasto fare bolle subacquee, per la prima volta, nelle acque trasparenti e sorridenti del mare della mia infanzia, il Tirreno, dove le maree sono piu’ dolci e le correnti più tranquille!

L’Isola del Giglio (il cui nome deriva dalla latinizzazione della parola greca che significa capra: Aegilium) è un’isola magnifica di granito situata a 15 km ovest della costa della Toscana del sud. Fa parte del Parco Nazionale dell’Arcipelago Toscano, il più grande parco marino d’Europa, ed ha una superficie quadrata inferiore a quella dell’Elba. E’ ben conosciuta dalla comunita’ italiana subacquea per le sue correnti gentili e l’eccellente visibilità.

Topograficamente, l’isola è dominata dai fianchi ripidi della collina chiamata Poggio della Pagana che raggiunge l’altezza di 490 metri. La sua costa è principalmente rocciosa, accessibile da terra attraverso alcune strade strette e tortuose, e un network di sentieri che raggiungono la riva dall’acqua turchese o punti di osservazione con viste mozzafiato. Evidenze archeologiche suggeriscono che fu abitata dall’età del bronzo.

Quattro delle sei immersion che ho fatto al Giglio erano da gommoni appartenenti a Massimilliano Marsalli che, assieme a sua moglie Yaris, opera il dive center piu’ piccolo che abbia mai visto chiamato Max Shark. Il centro è situato a pochi passi dal terminale del traghetto a Giglio Porto, la cittadina principale dell’isola. Lo spazio limitato che Massimiliano ha a disposizione per dirigere la sua attività di subacquea ricreativa è archettonicamente in sintonia con i ristorantini intimi, angusti caffè e stretti vicoli della pittoresca cittadina marinara. Massimiliano e Yaris mi prenotarono un monolocale dietro l’angolo dal loro ufficio-casa e vicino ad una gelateria di produzione propria dove ho assaggiato un gusto che non avevo mai provato prima: basilico.

Il mare invitante dell’isola e il sole mediterraneo mi fecero credere che fossi da qualche parte nei Caraibi. ‘Sara’ la mia muta semi stagna di 6.5 mm troppo spessa?’ mi chiedevo quando la stavo indossando dai fianchi in giù e stavo caricando la mia attrezzatura sulla barca per fare la mia prima immersione. Quando raggiungemmo il sito dell’immersione io ero surriscaldata e decisi di indossare il BCD in acqua. Ritornata in superficie, mi resi conto che il Giglio non era poi un’isola cosi’ tropicale e i mei dubbi sullo spessore della mia muta scomparvero in un batter d’occhio. Mi sembrava che fosse eccessivo a profondita’ al di sopra dei 15 metri, dove la temperatura dell’ acqua era sui 20° C, ma al di sotto c’era un termoclino che fece scendere la temperatura ai 15° C. Dopo un po’ che nuotavo in profondita’ mi vennero i brividi come se fossi stata immersa nell’acqua del Pacific Northwest.

Sono cresciuta imparando il sistema metrico decimale. Da quando sono diventata una sub negli Stati Uniti ho dovuto imparare il sistema customary. Al Giglio, dopo aver regolato il computer da piedi in metri, pensavo ancora in piedi. All’inizio, leggere la profondità in metri e convertirla in piedi mi confondeva un po’. Dovevo continuamente ricordarmi che c’era una bella differenza tra 30 metri e 30 piedi in termine di bottom time e consumo d’aria.

La bellezza subacquea del Giglio si rivela lentamente e inaspettatamente. A profondità poco profonde, pareti rocciose e massi mostrano una cacofonia di colori brillanti. Diverse specie di spugne incrostano le loro superfici dure trasformandole in dipinti astratti, dove azzurro, rosa e arancione circondano le colonne e tentacoli gialli delle margherite di mare (Parazoanthus axinellae).

In acque al di sotto dei 25 metri, i rossi sgargianti delle Gorgonie (Paramuricea clavata, un corallo i cui polipi non producono uno scheletro di carbonato di calcio) ed il Corallo Rosso (Corallium rubrum) emergono nel loro splendore sotto la luce di una torcia subacquea. Nuotare con pinnate tranquille tenendo gli occhi ben aperti m’ha facilitato a scorgere aragoste, murene, polpi e barracuda. Di notte, i pesci locali sono più avvicinabili e si lasciano fotografare con facilità, mentre gamberetti dall’aspetto tropicale e granchi emergono dalle loro tane rocciose.

Per la prima volta, ho avuto l’occasione di incontrare un mollusco straordinario che non avrei mai pensato che vivesse in queste acque. Le sagome triangolari delle Nacchere (Pinna nobilis) si innalzano dal fondale sabbioso in acque poco profonde fino ad un’altezza di 1 metro. Nuotare al disopra di queste grandi conchiglie era come volare a bassa quota sopra monoliti in miniature. Le Nacchere sono i bivalve piu’ grossi del mediterraneo.

Al Giglio, ho avuto anche l’occasione di immergermi dentro le rovine di una villa romana che fu costruita dalla famiglia Domizi Enobarbi (da cui discese l’imperatore Nerone) durante la prima metà del I secolo a.C. La villa giace nella Cala del Saraceno, una piccola baia situata a pochi passi dal porticciolo di Giglio Porto. Entrambi gli appassionati di snorkel e subacquea possono ancora vedere i resti del Murenarium, una larga vasca specificatamente costruita per acquacultura. Ora diverse specie di pesci, alcuni molto colorati come la Donzella Pavonina (Thalassoma pavo) e la Bavosa Rossa (Parablennius nigriceps), nuotano a piacere dentro e fuori la vasca. Non finiscono piu’ sul menue dei Domizi Enobarbi, ma devono schivare l’appetito sfrecciante dei cormorani.

Quarant’anni fa, come giovane snorkeler, incominciai a scoprire le meraviglie del mare Tirreno che in estate languidamente bagna le sponde della costa toscana. Oggi, come sub, le stesse acque incantevoli mi hanno dato l’opportunità di incontrare altre incredibili creature marine e di immergermi, per la prima volta, in un sito archeologico che mi ha stuzzicato la voglia di fare altre immersioni di questo genere.

Under Ponte de Dom Louís I/Sotto il Ponte de Dom Louís I, Porto

Last time I visited Porto, the second largest city of Portugal, was 15 years ago. I still vividly remember walking along the picturesque riverside Ribeira and admiring its colorful tiled houses. The green water of the Douro River was lazily heading to the Atlantic Ocean under a westerly sun and a deep blue sky. This apparent harmonious coexistence between sky, water and urban environment was abruptly shaken by the sudden fall of a large object that splashed straight into the Douro River in front of my eyes. It was a black plastic bin bag full of trash. Somebody, living in one of the apartments several floors above the pavement where I was walking, had decided to get rid of smelly undesirable waste by throwing it, without any hesitation, from a window into the fluvial water below. Immediately, a sense of disappointment poisoned my sense of wellbeing.

More than a decade later, I am back to visit Porto again. I am standing on top of Ponte de Dom Louís I. The spectacular view of the city, whose buildings cling on the steep banks of the Douro River is spoiled by a local woman who tosses some trash on the riverside as if it were the most obvious thing to do. Furthermore, following her moves from above the bridge makes me notice also that the river near that spot is not green but gray. I walk down to the riverbank. A closer inspection reveals that a large pipe is dumping raw sewage into the Douro attracting tons of voracious fish. I have never seen so many fish all at once in front of a sewer outlet before.

After so many years, it is a disappointment to find out that Porto inhabitants still do not seem to care that much for the health of their river. It is really surprising that, despite receiving a lot of money from the EU, apparently the Portuguese government has not spent one euro to improve the water quality of the Douro River, well at least in Porto.

Quindici anni sono passati dall’ultima volta che ho visitato Porto, la più grande città portoghese dopo Lisbona. Vivamente ricordo ancora quando passeggiavo sul suo lungofiume pittoresco, chiamato Ribeira, ammirando case rivestite di piastrelle vivamente colorate. L’acqua verde intenso del fiume Douro pigramente stava scorrendo verso l’oceano Atlantico sotto un sole di ponente e un cielo blu intenso. Quest’apparente coesistenza armoniosa tra l’acqua, il cielo e l’ambiente urbano fu improvvisamente scossa dalla caduta improvvisa di un oggetto di dimensioni piuttosto grandi che si schiantò sulla superficie fluida del Douro con uno ‘splash’ sonoro difronte ai mei occhi. L’oggetto in questione era un sacco di plastica imbottito di spazzatura. Qualcuno, che viveva in un appartamento diversi piani al disopra del selciato su cui camminavo, decise di disfarsi di rifiuti indesiderabili buttandoli senza esitazione dalla finestra direttamente sulle acque fluviali sottostanti. Immediatamente, un senso di delusione incominciò a erodere il mio senso di benessere.

Più di una decina d’anni sono passati e sto visitando di nuovo Porto. Dal Ponte de Dom Louís I la vista spettacolare della città, con i suoi edifici arroccati sulle sponde scoscese del fiume Douro, è rovinata da una donna locale che butta una cartaccia sulla riva come se fosse la cosa più naturale da fare. Inoltre, mentre la sto seguendo con lo sguardo dall’alto del ponte, noto che lì vicino l’acqua del fiume non è verde ma grigia. Perciò decido di scendere giù e raggiungere la riva del fiume. Un’ispezione più ravvicinata rivela la presenza di una tubazione che scarica rifiuti fognari direttamente nel Douro attraendo centinaia di pesci ingordi. Non ho mai visto tanto pesce vicino a uno scarico fognario prima d’ora.

Dopo tanti anni, il fatto che i cittadini di Porto continuano a dimostrare poca sensibilità riguardo alla salute del loro fiume è una bella delusione. Mi sorprende che nonostante tutti i fondi ricevuti dalla Comunità Europea, il governo portoghese non sembra di aver speso neanche un euro per migliorare la qualità dell’acqua del Douro, almeno qui a Porto.

Amphibian Roots Part Two/Radici Anfibie Seconda Parte

On June 18^th I had the opportunity to pay a second visit to the Tyrrhenian Sea. This time I did not need to catch buses and trains because my sister gave me a ride. We drove to Livorno then headed south, following a rocky coastline, to reach her favorite lido called Fortullino, where the water is more transparent and, supposedly, cleaner than at Viareggio.

A narrow and curvy one-lane road cuts through this stretch of the Tuscan coast. During the summer, it is usually congested with all sorts of wheeled vehicles and parking can be difficult. At various points, public trails steeply lead to the sea. Some are definitively not suitable for scuba divers (unless the divers in question don’t mind doing some rock climbing). From a distance, small lidos emerge from concrete platforms or man-made sandy beaches. Old towers and modern restaurants unexpectedly appear at the end of sharp bends with breathtaking views over the blue Tyrrhenian Sea. During days without too much haze, several islands, which are part of the Arcipelago Toscano, are also visible.

At a viewpoint, we parked the car to check the mood of the watery expanse that seafarers have been crossing since times immemorial. What we saw did not make us very happy: a cool wind creased the surface of the sea with nervous whitecaps while mighty breakers were bashing the rocky shore without mercy. There was no way that we could go swimming at Fortullino because the entry to the water was on large stones and in those conditions it would have been far too dangerous.

Feeling disappointed, we bowed at Nature’s will and changed our plan. After driving for 10 miles further south, we reached the small town of Rosignano Solvay. The rough shoreline gradually flattened and sand replaced rocks and cliffs. As a teenager, I remember glancing at this bright strip of sand from the back seat of my family’s car while my father was driving on the highway. In those days I had no idea that forty years later I would have snorkeled in the weirdest water of the entire Italian coast at this very beach.

Immersing my body at the Spiaggie Bianche (White Beaches) was like taking a bath in milk. Unfortunately, it was not the milk of asses in which ancient, powerful women like Cleopatra or Poppaea Sabina (mistress and later wife of the Roman Emperor Nero) used to bathe every day to enhance their beauty.

Instead, it was a concoction of seawater mixed with cooked and finely grinded limestone and calcium chloride. An industrial waste that the nearby chemical plant Solvay has been dumping into the Tyrrhenian Sea since the 1940s while manufacturing sodium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate.

My sister reassured me that swimming in that water was not a serious health hazard. Besides, a sign warned us that swimming was not allowed on a small stretch of the beach only (where the water is always white). It was an area one hundred meters long on both sides of a channel, which Solvay uses to discharge its waste into sea, located several miles south from the sandy spot where we had laid our towels, so according to the Italian law we were ok.

However she was surprised to notice that the water was milky white right where we were supposed to swim and everywhere else along the Spiaggie Bianche. Usually, it is crystal clear and turns turquoise with the increasing depth of the sea bottom as it were a pristine tropical beach. Even the water in another nearby channel, which supplies the plant with fresh seawater, was pure white. We guessed that the northwest wind and the rough conditions of the sea were spreading the limestone and calcium chloride from the mouth of the discharging channel to the whole beach. At the same time, they were probably stirring up the layers of these chemicals that have been sinking to the bottom for decades.

My first attempt to snorkel in this churning whiteness failed because, perhaps, the sun blinding light and the glow from this bizarre water somehow made me lose my concentration while I was wearing my fins and the waves were tossing me around. When I thought I was ready, I began to kick only to discover, after few seconds, that my left foot felt lighter than the right one and with dismay I discovered that I had lost one fin!

Looking for a fin in that kind of visibility that goes well below zero was like trying to find a needle in a huge haystack. In vain I tried to look for it with the mask and my nose glued to the bottom. I could not see even the other bathers’ feet. I quickly gave up and began to walk back and forth in the area between the spot where I remembered I was messing with the fin last and the stretch of beach where I thought the waves were likely pushing the fin to. While I was using my legs and feet as ‘fin detector’ all at sudden I saw the fin emerging from that artificial milk. A young man was holding it in one of his hands looking rather puzzled…

Mi ricordo ancora un giorno di tarda estate negli anni ’70, quando raggiunsi con mia sorella e il suo ragazzo, sul suo canotto, una grotta marina situata dietro la baia di Cavoli nell’Isola d’Elba, l’isola più grande dell’Arcipelago Toscano. A quel tempo ero già una patita dello snorkeling e guardavo con entusiasmo i documentari televisivi di Jacques Cousteau della serie “L’Odissea Subacquea del Comandante Cousteau”. Per i mei occhi di bambina la mia avventura con le pinne e la maschera dentro quella grotta era paragonabile a una delle immersioni tropicali mitiche di Cousteau. Le sfumature di verde e blu dell’acqua rivelavano una bellezza del mare Tirreno sconosciuta che m’incantò in modo indelebile.

Lo scorso giugno vissi una simile esperienza indimenticabile mentre mi sono immersa nelle acque di un’altra isola dell’Arcipelago Toscano, chiamata Giglio. Sono diventa una sub nelle acque fredde e verdi del Pacific Northwest, dove la visibilità spesso si riduce a pochi metri e le correnti possono essere difficoltose. Che contrasto fare bolle subacquee, per la prima volta, nelle acque trasparenti e sorridenti del mare della mia infanzia, il Mediterraneo, dove le maree sono più dolci e le correnti più tranquille!

L’Isola del Giglio (il cui nome deriva dalla latinizzazione della parola greca che significa capra: Aegilium) è un’isola magnifica di granito situata a 15 km ovest della costa della Toscana del sud. Fa parte del Parco Nazionale dell’Arcipelago Toscano, il più grande parco marino d’Europa, ed ha una superficie quadrata inferiore a quella dell’Elba. E’ ben conosciuta dalla comunità italiana subacquea per le sue correnti gentili e l’eccellente visibilità.

Topograficamente, l’isola è dominata dai fianchi ripidi della collina chiamata Poggio della Pagana che raggiunge l’altezza di 490 metri. La sua costa è principalmente rocciosa, accessibile da terra attraverso alcune strade strette e tortuose, e un network di sentieri che raggiungono la riva dall’acqua turchese o punti di osservazione con viste mozzafiato. Evidenze archeologiche suggeriscono che fu abitata dall’età del bronzo.

Quattro delle sei immersion che ho fatto al Giglio, erano da gommoni appartenenti a Massimiliano Marsalli che, assieme a sua moglie Yaris, opera il dive center più piccolo che abbia mai visto chiamato Max Shark. Il centro è situato a pochi passi dal terminale del traghetto a Giglio Porto, la cittadina principale dell’isola. Lo spazio limitato che Massimiliano ha a disposizione per dirigere la sua attività di subacquea ricreativa è architettonicamente in sintonia con i ristorantini intimi, angusti caffè e stretti vicoli della pittoresca cittadina marinara. Massimiliano e Yaris mi prenotarono un monolocale dietro l’angolo dal loro ufficio-casa e vicino ad una gelateria di produzione propria dove ho assaggiato un gusto che non avevo mai provato prima: basilico.

Il mare invitante dell’isola e il sole mediterraneo mi fecero credere che fossi da qualche parte nei Caraibi. ‘Sara’ la mia muta semi stagna di 6,5 mm troppo spessa?’ mi chiedevo quando la stavo indossando dai fianchi in giù e stavo caricando la mia attrezzatura sulla barca per fare la mia prima immersione. Quando raggiungemmo il sito dell’immersione, io ero surriscaldata e decisi di indossare il BCD in acqua. Ritornata in superficie, mi resi conto che il Giglio non era poi un’isola così tropicale e i mei dubbi sullo spessore della mia muta scomparvero in un batter d’occhio. Mi sembrava che fosse eccessivo a profondità sopra i 15 metri, dove la temperatura dell’acqua era sui 20° C, ma al di sotto c’era un termoclino che fece scendere la temperatura ai 15° C. Dopo un po’ che nuotavo in profondità mi vennero i brividi come se fossi stata immersa nell’acqua del Pacific Northwest.

Sono cresciuta imparando il sistema metrico decimale. Da quando sono diventata una sub negli Stati Uniti ho dovuto imparare il sistema customary. Al Giglio, dopo aver regolato il computer da piedi in metri, pensavo ancora in piedi. All’inizio, il processo di leggere la profondità in metri e convertirla in piedi mi confondeva un po’. Dovevo continuamente ricordarmi che c’era una bella differenza tra 30 metri e 30 piedi in termine di bottom time e consumo d’aria.

La bellezza subacquea del Giglio si rivela lentamente e meno quando te lo aspetti. A profondità poco profonde, pareti rocciose e massi mostrano una cacofonia di colori brillanti. Diverse specie di spugne incrostano le loro superfici dure trasformandole in dipinti astratti, dove azzurro, rosa e arancione circondano le colonne e tentacoli gialli delle margherite di mare (Parazoanthus axinellae).

In acque di sotto i 25 metri, i rossi sgargianti delle Gorgonie (Paramuricea clavata, un corallo i cui polipi non producono uno scheletro di carbonato di calcio) e del Corallo Rosso (Corallium rubrum) emergono splendidamente sotto la luce di una torcia subacquea. Nuotando con pinnate tranquille con gli occhi ben aperti facilitò l’avvistamento di aragoste, murene, polpi e barracuda. Di notte, i pesci locali sono più avvicinabili e si lasciano fotografare con facilità, mentre gamberetti dall’aspetto tropicale e granchi emergono dalle loro tane rocciose.

Per la prima volta, ho avuto l’occasione di incontrare un mollusco straordinario che non avrei mai pensato che vivesse in queste acque. Le sagome triangolari delle Nacchere (Pinna nobilis) s’innalzano dal fondale sabbioso in acque poco profonde fino a un’altezza di 1 metro. Nuotare al disopra di queste grandi conchiglie era come volare a bassa quota sopra monoliti in miniature. Le Nacchere sono il bivalve più grosso del mediterraneo.

Al Giglio, ho avuto anche l’occasione di immergermi dentro le rovine di una villa romana che fu costruita dalla famiglia Domizi Enobarbi (da cui discese l’imperatore Nerone) durante la prima metà del I secolo a.C. La villa giace nella Cala del Saraceno, una piccola baia situata a pochi passi dal porticciolo di Giglio Porto. Entrambi gli appassionati di snorkel e subacquea possono ancora vedere i resti del Murenarium, una larga vasca specificatamente costruita per acquacultura. Ora diverse specie di pesci, alcuni molto colorati come la Donzella Pavonina (Thalassoma pavo) e la Bavosa Rossa (Parablennius nigriceps), nuotano a piacere dentro e fuori la vasca. Non finiscono più sul menu dei Domizi Enobarbi, ma devono schivare l’appetito sfrecciante dei cormorani.

Quarant’anni fa, come giovane snorkeler, incominciai a scoprire le meraviglie del mare Tirreno che in estate languidamente bagna le sponde della costa toscana. Oggi, come sub, le stesse acque incantevoli mi hanno dato l’opportunità di incontrare altre incredibili creature marine e di immergermi, per la prima volta, in un sito archeologico che mi ha stuzzicato la voglia di fare altre immersioni di questo genere.

The River Serchio is the third longest river in Tuscany. I cross it every time I go to Lucca. Since my arrival in this province, I have spent just one afternoon on its banks. I did not dare to go for a swim because, after asking around, all the locals whom I talked to discouraged me to do so. Paper mills are located upstream and nobody knows for sure what kind of impact the wastes from these plants have on the health of the river and its bathers.

Il fiume Serchio e' il terzo fiume più lungo della Toscana. Lo attraverso ogni volta che vado a Lucca. Da quando sono arrivata in questa provincia sono stata sulla sua riva una volta sola. Non mi sono azzardata a fare il bagno perché' dopo aver chiesto il parere di varie persone del luogo, tutti mi hanno sconsigliato di farlo. A monte ci sono delle cartiere e nessuno sapeva che impatto gli scarichi di queste fattorie potessero avere sulla salute del fiume e dei suoi bagnanti.

The Po River is the longest river in Italy. I have never seen its source in the western part of the Alps. For me it is a wide mass of muddy water whose quality is pretty questionable considering that it runs through vast intensively cultivated fields, pig and cow farms and a vast number of different factories and power plants. Moreover, for centuries untreated raw sewage from the biggest cities of Northern Italy have found its way to these waters.

Il fiume Po e' il più' lungo d'Italia. Non ho mai visto la sua sorgente nelle Alpi Occidentali. Io lo conosco come una massa d'acqua fangosa la cui qualita' lascia proprio a desiderare per via che il suo corso scorre tra vasti campi coltivati intensivamente, allevamenti di maiali e mucche, e un vasto numero di fabbriche ed impianti termoelettrici. Inoltre, per secoli gli scarichi fognari delle grandi città' dell'Italia del Nord hanno trovato la via per raggiungere le sponde del fiume.

Amphibian Roots Part One/Radici Anfibie Parte Prima

Today I finally had the chance to go to the beach for the first time since my arrival in Italy on April 14. I walked one mile down hills wooded with olive groves and oak trees (where my sister lives) caught a bus to downtown Lucca (a small city in northern Tuscany situated near the famous white marble quarries of the Apuane Alps; where Michelangelo used to select his stones for sculptures like the Pietà). Then, hurriedly, I got on another bus to the seaside town of Viareggio, which is the nearest place to go swimming in the Tyrrhenian Sea by public transportation from Lucca.

I haven’t been in the water for more than a month so I couldn’t wait to get wet in this familiar warm sea. My parents used to take me to this stretch of the Tuscan coast, called Versilia, when I was just a baby in 1963. Of those days I don’t remember a darn thing. I just know that I was an intrepid ‘sand-crawler’ by judging from some old family snapshots.

In the 60s the Versilia was already a hub for holyday-makers. But tourism began to be part of the local economy since the 18^th century. However, it was during the reign of Maria Luisa di Borbone, a century later, when the still unspoiled coastline, characterized by marshes and pine forests, gradually succumbed to the axes and shovels of early developers. They gradually built public baths one next to each other and dockyards for shipbuilding.

Versilia’s endless wide sandy beach slopes gently into a shallow seabed and it is particularly popular among families with children to these days. As far as one can see, this stretch of fine sand is crowned with hotels, cafes, restaurants, nightclubs and discos. I would not go hungry or thirsty here even if I wanted to…

As you may have guessed already, Viareggio does not stand out for its pristine underwater riches but for its exciting beach life above the water. The city is the Italian capital of mass ‘beach tourism’ and manufacturing of luxurious yachts. It is also renowned for its carnival where huge paper mache’ puppets parade through the boulevard that runs parallel to shore.

Viareggio’s beach is a place for showing off your newest swimsuit and fancy boat at the sound of the latest hits and having a hell of a good time. Nature, relegated as a mere backdrop, tries to cope as best as she can with the seasonal invasion of hordes of tourists, that a local young man estimated to be in the order of 35,000 in Viareggio alone.

Despite my sister’s warnings, I stubbornly packed my snorkeling gear in my backpack. I did not have any past recollections of what the water was really like and I wanted to see it with my own eyes. At a café I asked where I could find a jetty (the only place where one can find rocks along this coast) and I rented a beach-umbrella next to it. I must have been the only beach goer equipped with fins, mask and snorkel in the whole 12 miles of the Versilia. Now that the day is over I understand why:

Oggi finalmente ho avuto la possibilita’ di andare alla spiaggia per la prima volta da quando sono arrivata in Italia il 14 di aprile. Ho camminato per quasi due chilometri giu’ per colline ricoperte di uliveti e querceti (dove abita mia sorella). Ho preso un autobus per Lucca (una piccolo citta’ situata vicino alle famose cave di marmo delle Alpi Apuane; dove Michelangleo andava a scegliersi i suoi blocchi per scolpire sculture come La Pieta’). Poi di fretta mi sono infilata in una corriera per Viareggio. Il posto piu’ vicino per andare al mare con i trasporti pubblici da Lucca.

E’ da piu’ di un mese che non mi tuffo in acqua per cui non vedevo l’ora di bagnarmi nelle acque di questo mare familiare. I miei genitori mi portavano su questro tratto di costa toscana, chiamata Versilia, quando ero appena un bebe’ nel 1963. Di quei giorni io non mi ricordo proprio niente. So solo che ero un’intrepide camminatrice a quattro zampe su sabbia, a giudicare da alcune foto di famiglia.

Negli anni 60s la Versilia era già' un centro conosciuto per per vacanze balneari. Pero’ il turismo comincio’ a far parte dell’economia locale fino all settecento. Ma fun durante il regno di Maria Luisa di Borbone, avennuto nel secolo successivo, che questo tratto di costa, ancora coperto da pinete e lagune, gradualmente fu trasformato  sotto l’azione di accette e piccozze dei primi costruttori edilizi. Gradaulamente incominciarono a comparire  bagni pubblici uno accanto all’altro, come li conosciamo noi oggigiorno, e darsene per cantieri navali.

La Versilia e’ una vasta espansa di sabbia che dolcemente si inclina nel mar Tirreno creando un fondale basso. Per questo e’ particolarmente popolare a famiglie con bambini. Il bordo orientale della spiaggia e’ costellato da alberghi, café’m ristoranti, nightclubs e discoteche che si perdono a vista d’occhio. Qui non riuscirei  a patire la fame e la sete anche se lo volessi…

Come avrete gia’ capito, Viareggio non spicca come localita’ balneare per le sue bellezze marine ma per la sua vita eccitante sopra l’acqua e sulla spiaggia. La città’ è la capital italiana del turismo di massa balneare e di construzione di barche da riporto di lusso. Inoltre e’ anche famosa per il suo carnevale, caratterizzato dalla sfilata di  giganteschi carri di cartapesta attraverso il viale che fiancheggia il lungomare.

La spiaggia di Viareggio e’ un luogo dove mostri il tuo ultimo modello di costume da bagno e la tua barca sfiziosa al suono degli ultimi hits delle classiche pop e ti diverti fino a notte fonda. La Natura, relegata come semplice scenario, cerca di far fronte come meglio puo’ alla invasione stagionale di orde di turisti, che un ragazzo del posto ha calcolato che siano 35.000 nella sola Viareggio.

Nonostante l’avvertimento di mia sorella, cocciutamente ho infilato le pinne e la maschera nel mio zaino prima di partire. Non ho ricordi di come era l’acqua veramente e la volevo vedere con i miei occhi. In un café’ ho chiesto dove potevo trovare un molo (l’unico posto in tutta questa costa dove potevo trovare delle roccie) ed ho noleggiato un ombrellone in un bagno lì vicino. Devo essere stata l’unica bagnante in tutti I 20 km di costa della Versilia ad indossare pinne, maschera e snorkel. Ora che il giorno e’ finito, ne capisco il motivo’:

The Other Side of Culebra/L'altra faccia di Culebra

The Island of Culebra is located off the eastern coast of the main island of Puerto Rico. It still retains a laid back atmosphere. Its coastline is dotted with different kind of beaches that are still rather pristine. However, unfortunately the coral reefs around Culebra were hit by a major coral bleaching in 2005. Evidence of this devastating phonemenon are everywhere.

L'isola di Culebra e' localizzata al largo della costa orientale dell'isola maggiore di Puerto Rico. E' un luogo che ancora ritiene un'atmosphera rilassante. La sua costa e' punteggiata da spiagge diverse che sono ancora piuttosto incontaminate. Tuttavia sfortunamente le barriere coralline intorno Culebra sono state danneggiate da un serio sbiancamento del corallo nel 2005.

These beaches are not spared by the presence of trash. It comes from the ocean or is dumped on the ground by careless people.

Ironically it is the presence in the sea bed of unexploded US ammunitions that is keeping the developers' hands off of these beaches.

Ironicamente e' la presenza di munizione inesplose americane che sta tenendo le mani dei plazzinari legate e non possono costruire a piacere.

It's colder than usual today. The wind is blowing from the north, something that does not happen very often and the temperature has dropped to freezing point.

E' una giornata piu' fredda del solito. Il vento sta soffiando dal nord, cosa che non succede molto spesso e la temperatura ha raggiunto il punto di congelamento.

It's not snowing so a very distinct line on the beach clearly shows where the highest point of the tide have been.

Non sta nevicando per cui un distinta linea sulla spaiggia demarca dove e' arrivato il punto piu' alto della marea.

Despite the cold balds eagles do they usual round and check me out from a safe distance.

Nonostante il freddo le aquile dalla testa bianca conducono la loro consueta ispezione e mi controllano da una distanza di sicurezza.

Above my head on the bluff icicles appear whenever there are suitable edges in the clay wall.

Sopra la mia testa sulla scogliera ghiaccioli appaiono dove ci sono bordi adatti nella parete di argilla.

However water keeps flowing downwards to the beach even if ice is present.

The water mingles with clay, freezes and creates unusual icles.

On the beach at the water edge the low tied reveals clay formations that are hard and free of ice.

Sulla spiaggia doce si rompono le onde la bassa marea rivela formazioni di argilla compatte e libere dal ghiaccio.

The Piddock Clam (Penitella penita) call this world of compact clay that is perpetually pounded by wave action home by drilling a borrow into it.

L'arsella chiamata Piddock Clam (Penitella penita) considera questo mondo di argilla ferma e dura, che e' perpetuamente battuta dall'azione delle onde, casa sua perforandolo e creando una piccola tana circolare.

If an area of clay bears too many clam burrows it will eventually break off due to the force of current and waves like this one:

On February 24th in the early afternoon the tide was way down exposing rocks and boulders for a long period of time that usually are out of reach for a hiker, like this on on the picture.

Il 24 di febbraio nel primo pomeriggio la marea si abbasso' notevolemnte per un lungo periodo di tempo scoprendo sassi e macigni che di solito sono impossibili da raggiungere per un'escursionista come questo nella fotografia.

West Beach faces directly the Strait of Juan de Fuca. A large body of water where winds from the west northwest can make its surface pretty rough. The side of this boulder that is exposed directly to the wave action has a rather different look from the one that is more protected from the surf.

La spiaggia di West Beach si affaccia direttamente sullo Stretto di Juan de Fuca. Un'estesa massa d'acqua dove i venti dall'ovest e nordovest possono rendere la sua superficie molto increspata. Il lato di questo macigno che e' esposto all'azione diretta delle onde ha un'aspetto piuttosto diverso da quello che e' piu' protetto dai frangenti del mare.

Different marine animals have adapted to live in such rather harsh environment. Some of them grow on the rocky surface of the boulder and spend their entire life there without going anywhere else. The Northern Feather Duster Worm (Eudistylia vancouveri) is one of them. Acorn Barnacles (Balanus glandula) have settled down on the outer walls of the worm leathery tube. At low tide the worm retreats inside disappearing from view.

Diversi animali marini si sono adattati a vivere in questo ambiente aspro. Alcuni di loro crescono sulla superficie rocciosa del macigno e trascorrono tutta la loro vita senza spostarsi. Il Northern Feather Duster Worm (Eudistylia vancouveri) e' uno di quelli. Acorn Barnacles (Balanus glandula) si sono stabiliti sui muri esterni del tubo del verme che sembra fatto di pelle di animale. A marea bassa il verme tubolare si ritira dentro e scomparendo dalla vista.

Another animal that build its calcite home attached to the boulder is the Thatched Barnacle (Semibalanus cariosus).

Un'altro animale che costruisce la sua casa di calcite sulla superficie del macigno e' il Thatched Barnacle (Semibalanus cariosus).

While the Pacific Blue Mussel (Mytilus edulis)
attaches itself onto the rock with threads called byssus that grow from its foot.

Mentre il Pacific Blue Mussel (Mytilus edulis) si attacca sulla superficie della roccia con fili chiamti bisso che crescono del suao piede.

The tube warms, barnacles and mussels create a 'layer' on the surface of the boulder where other animals can find food and shelter. Room is limited so everybody compete for space and a lot of times end up living on top of each other in conditions that we humans would considered 'over-crowded'.

I vermi tubolari, barnacles e cozze creano uno strato sulla duperficie del macigno dove altri animali possono trovare cibo e rifugio. Qui non c'e' molto posto e tutti competono per spazio e molto spesso finiscono per vivere gli uni su gli altri in condizioni che noi umani chiameremo 'super-affollate'.

Fort Ebey Beach: Mission Impossible?/ La Spiaggia del Forte di Ebey: Missione Impossibile?

This concrete cube reminds me of the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. However I doubt that it has the same spiritual significance and fascinating history. It also takes me to the first scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick when the apes find the Monolith.

I don't think that this rough looking 'artifact' has been 'teleported' on the beach from an alien spaceship. More likely it tumbled down from the top of the bluff like any other banal terrestrial object. The bottom line is that I cannot fit it in my backpack or drag it to the nearest dump site, so it has to stay here!

Questo cubo di cemento mi fa venire in mente la Kaaba situato a Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Tuttavia dubito che abbia lo stesso significato spirituale e storia affascinante. Inoltre mi conduce alla prima scena del film di Stanley Kubrick 2001: A Space Odyssey quando le scimmie trovano il Monolito. Non penso che questo 'artefatto' malandato sia stato 'teleportato' da una nave spaziale aliena. Molto probabilmente e' rotolato dalla cima della scogliera come un qualunque oggetto terrestre banale.

Alla fine, pero', quello che conta e' che non riesco ad infilarlo nel mio zaino o trascinarlo nella discarica piu' vicina per cui deve rimane qui.

The beach at Fort Ebey is covered with cobblestones that make walking a bit more difficult. The flat object on top of them it's another large fragment of reinforced concrete. Initially I thought it was made of fiberglass and that I was able to hold it in my hands but after a closer inspection my hopes were dashed. It has to stay here too!

La spiaggia del Forte Ebey e' coperta di sassi che rendono il cammino un po' piu' difficile. L'oggetto piatto che sta sopra alle roccie e' un'altro grande frammento di cemento rinforzato. Inizialmente pensavo che fosse fatto di fiberglass e che avrei potuto sollevarlo con le mani ma dopo averlo ispezionato piu' da vicino ho capito che la mia idea era futile. Anche lui rimmarra' qui!

Today seems to be the day of humongous impossible beach trash!

The bluff is gobbling a larger than human size styrofoam float.

Oggi sembra che sia un giorno caraterizzato da spazzatura di spiaggia di grande dimensioni. La scogliera di arigilla e sabbia si sta ingoiando un galleggiante fatto di polistirolo che e' piu' grosso di un essere umano.

The styrofoam float is not in bad company. Everywhere in a radius of few feet from it there are collectible smaller pieces of plastic.

Il galleggiante di polistirolo non e' in cattiva compagnia. Dappertutto nel raggio di pochi metri da lui ci sono pezzi di plastica raccoglibili.

At low tide more cobblestones are exposed and available to be inspected for signs of marine life.

A bassa marea ci sono piu' sassi scoperti e disponibili per essere ispezionati per vedere se c'e qualche forma di vita marina.

The rocks are populated with the common Dogwinkle. Here a Northern Striped Winkle (Nucella ostrina) is sharing the same rock with what may be Frilled Dogwinkles (Nucella lamellosa)

I sassi sono popolati da una conchiglia comune il Dogwinkle. Qui a Northern Striped Winkle (Nucella ostrina) condivide una roccia con quelli che penso che siano Frilled Dogwinkles (Nucella lamellosa).

and other are laying eggs.

Another common mollusk that can tolerate being out of the water for long periods of time is the Mossy Chiton (Mopalia muscosa).

Un'altro mollusco che puo' tollerare di essere esposto all'aria per lunghi periodi e' il Mossy Chiton (Mopalia muscosa).

Closer to the water, on rocks and into the sand the Aggregate Green Anemone (Anthopleura elegantissima) shows up. This anemone lives in colonies that can cover entire boulders. Individuals belonging to specific colonies don't mingle with each other. If they get into contact with other anemones from a neighboring colony they will fire specific nematocysts (stinging capsules) to keep them at bay and establish boundaries on the rock surface.

Piu' vicino all'acqua, su roccie e nella sabbia l'anemone Anthopleura elegantissima appare. Questa enemone vive in colonie che possono ricoprire interi macigni. Invidui appartenenti a colonie diverse che vivono su di una stessa roccia non si mischiano tra loro. Se si toccano 'esplodono' specifiche capsule con cellule urticanti per tenersi a bada e stabilire confini sulla superficie rocciosa.

In one small pool I have found a small blob that is stiffly bouncing around under the wave action. It may be the dead body of a Ten-Tentacled Burrowing Anemone (Halcampa decemtentaculata)

In una pozza ho trovato una piccola massa bianca che rigidamente si scontra sui i sassi ad ogni ondata. Sembra il corpo morto dell'anemone Ten-Tentacled Burrowing Anemone (Halcampa decemtentaculata)

I gently lift a rock to see what I can find and voila'! Small shrimps are jumping around all over the place. But one in particular doesn't freak out. It's the biggest and prettiest. It's a Stout Costal Shrimp (Heptacarpus brevirostris). I have never seen it on a beach before.

Delicatamente sollevo un sasso per vedere che cosa posso trovarci e voila'! Piccoli gamberetti schizzano da tutte le parti. Ma uno in particolare non si allarma. E' il piu' grosso e carino e si chiama Stout Costal Shrimp (Heptacarpus brevirostris). Non l'ho mai visto prima sulla spiaggia.

Plump Isopods are more slow moving. I hold a couple of them in my hand for the time necessary to take a picture. Do you know that the Giant Isopods, which live in deep waters, can reach a length of 14 inches!

Gli Isopodi paffuti si muovono piu' lentamente. Ne tengo in mano due il tempo necessario per scattare una fotografia. Lo sai che gli Isopodi Giganti, che vivono in profondita' abissali, possono raggiungere la lunghezza di 36 centimetri?

While I am busy looking at this intertidal marine universe, the hazy Tahoma (Mt. Rainier) keeps a watchful eye on me from a distance.

Mentre curioso tra i sassi per vedere la vita della zona tra l'alta e bassa marea, il nebuloso Tahoma (il Monte Rainier) mantiene un'occhio su di me constantemente da lontano.

Among the seaweeds that cover the cobblestones the red ones are pretty charming.

Tra le alghe che ricoprono i sassi quelle rosse sono particilarmente attraenti.

The small Cryptric Kelp Crab (Pugettia richii) matches their color.

Il piccolo granchio Cryptric Kelp Crab (Pugettia richii) ha il loro stesso colore.

It's getting dark and I have to walk back to the parking lot in a hurry if I don't want to be locked inside the park. Unfortunately more beach trash shows up without warning...

Sta venendo buio e devo ritornare al parcheggio in fretta se non voglio essere chiusa dentro al parco. Sfortunatamente altra spazzatura di spiaggia arriva senza preavviso...

Sometimes the trash has handy holes...

More Plastic Bag Bans

The last few months, we've happily been able to report
on the success of various legislative efforts to ban
plastic bags.

In Texas, the South Padre Island City Council voted
unanimously to ban plastic bags. Compliance is
voluntary until January 2012, when it will become
mandatory.

In California, we have had two more big wins; both Marin
County and the City of Santa Monica voted (4-0 and 7-0,
respectively) to ban the bag.

In Italy, a ban that was passed in late December went
into effect quickly, and as of the first of this year,
retailers may exhaust their current stocks of plastic
bags, but thereafter are prohibited from distributing
new ones.

Many places around the world are considering bans, so
stay tuned!

West Beach on January 19/ La spiaggia West Beach il 19 di gennaio

After several days of restless weather the sun has appeared again welcomed by still air. The sea is as calm as a sleeping baby.

Dopo vari giorni di tempo inquieto il sole e' apparso di nuovo salutato da un'aria immobile. Il mare e' calmo come un bebe' addormentato.

Bald eagles patrol the beach from the air frequently. Can you see a dark dot with a white head and tail on top of a tree at the edge of the bluff?

Aquile dalla testa bianca sorvegliano la spiaggia dall'alto regolarmente. Lo vedi quel punto scuro con la testa e coda bianca appollaiato sul ramo di un'albero in cima alla scogliera?

With this dry weather the bluff is decorated with marks like a rock surface painted by Australian Aborigines.

Con il tempo piu' asciutto la scogliera e' decorata da segni come una superficie rocciosa dipinta da Aborigeni Australiani.

Unfortunately today is a rather bad day for trash. There is a lot washed out on the beach, especially the infamous styrofoam.

Sfortunatamente oggi e' una brutta giornata per quanto riguarda la spazzatura approdata sulla spiaggia. C'e' n'era parecchia, specialmente il maledetto polistirolo.

Low Tide and Rough Sea/ Bassa Marea e Mare Mosso

Yesterday the sea was rough again at West Beach. A westerly wind was blowing, not as hard as the one that swept the beach at the end of December, though. This time I was able to walk because the tide was very low and it was still going out.

Ieri il mare era di nuovo grosso. Un vento soffivava dall'ovest ma non forte come quello dello scorso dicembre. Questa volta sono riuscita a camminare sulla spiaggia perche' la marea era molto bassa e continuava a calare.

The crashing of the waves was constantly creating foam. I hoped that it was not the kind that killed thousands of sea birds on the Washington coast during the fall of 2009. I bet it wasn't because that foam was produced by the breaking down of a massive quantity of algae. Algal blooms usually occur when the weather is sunnier and the water is warmer.

The amount of foam on the beach that I saw was nothing to compare with this one in Australia!

Il fracassare delle onde generava continuamente schiuma. Ho sperato che non fosse quel tipo che uccise migliaia di uccelli marini sulla costa dello stato di Washigton l'autunno del 2009. Sicuramente non lo era perche' quella schiuma era stata prodotta dal disintegramento di una massa enorme di alghe. La 'fioritura' delle alghe e' un fenomeno che di solito accade quando il tempo e' piu' soleggiato e la temperature dell'acqua e' piu' calda.

La quantita' di schiuma che ho visto non era niente in paragone a questa in Australia!

This time I picked up only few small pieces of plastic.

The smaller they are the more insidious they become because collecting them is a useless chore unless I am armed with a riddle.

Questa volta ho raccolto solo pezzi di plastica piccoli.

Piu' piccoli sono e piu' diventano insidiosi perche' raccattarli diventa un processo inutile a meno che non abbia un setaccio.

Padilla Bay Refineries/Le Raffinerie di Padilla Bay

Padilla Bay is a place where fresh mingles with salt water, which rhythmically drowns an extensive mud flat: the estuary of the Skagit River. This soft and treacherous world is the winter home for hundreds of birds. It is also a place where western man has been manipulating since the end of the 19th century. Among the prominent man-made features that characterizes this expanse of mud and shallow water the Shell and Tesoro refineries stand out like any others in the distant horizon. Without any doubts they are two painful eye sores that won't go away any time soon, if they ever will. However at times they blend with their surroundings in an charming, yet uncanny way.

La Padilla Bay e' un luogo dove acqua dolce si mischia a quella salata che periodicamente inonda una vasta espansione di fango e detriti riverini: l'estuario del fiume Skagit. Questo mondo morbido ed insidioso e' un rifugio invernale per centinaia di uccelli. Padilla Bay e' anche un luogo dove l'uomo occidentale ha continuato a manipolare fin dalla fine del 19th secolo. Tra le predominanti alterazioni ambientali che l'uomo ha creato le raffinerie della Shell e Tesoro si impongono sul paesaggio al dispra del distante orizzonte. Senza alcun d'ubbio queste fabbriche sono pugni negli occhi che non spariranno presto, se lo faranno mai. Tuttavia alle volte queste costruzioni pericolose ed imponenti si confondono con il resto del paesaggio in un modo sia attraente che sinistro.
